陈述
配边假设 (cobordism hypothesis) 是说, 配边范畴是由一个完全可对偶对象所自由生成的对称幺半 $(\infty,n)$-范畴.
命题 (配边假设, 标架版本). 设 $\mathcal C$ 为对称幺半 $(\infty,n)$-范畴. 那么函子
$$
\mathsf{Bord}_n^{\mathrm{fr}} \to \mathcal C
$$
等同于 $\mathcal C$ 中的完全可对偶对象. 准确地说,
$$
\operatorname{Hom}(\mathsf{Bord}_n^{\mathrm{fr}},\mathcal C) \simeq (\mathcal C^{\mathrm{fd}})^\sim,
$$
其中 $(-)^{\sim}$ 表示取对象的生象.
函子 $\mathsf{Bord}_n^{\mathrm{fr}} \to \mathcal C$ 又称拓扑场论 (TFT) 或拓扑量子场论 (TQFT). 配边假设表明拓扑场论由其在一个点上的取值完全确定.
配边假设可视为缠结假设在余维数趋于 $+\infty$ 的极限情形.
例
有限维线性空间
固定一个域 $k$. 有限维 $k$-线性空间 $V$ 是 $k$-线性空间范畴 $(\mathsf{Vect},\otimes)$ 中的可对偶对象, 给出一个函子

\mathsf{Bord}_1^{\mathrm{fr}} \to \mathsf{Vect},
$$
- $+ \mapsto V$,
- $- \mapsto V^*$ ($V$ 的对偶空间),
- $\varnothing\mapsto k$,
- 下图是 $\{+,-\}$ 到 $\varnothing$ 的配边, 对应取值映射 $\mathrm{ev}\colon V^*\otimes V\to k$.
- 反过来的配边对应余取值映射 $\mathrm{coev}\colon k\to V\otimes V^*$; 若有 $V$ 的一组基 $\{e_i\}$ 和 $V^*$ 相应的对偶基 $\{f_i\}$, 则有
$$
\operatorname{coev}(1)=\sum_i e_i\otimes f_i.
$$
- 闭流形 $S^1$ 对应取值和余取值映射的复合 $\operatorname{ev}\circ\operatorname{coev}\colon k\to k$, 对应一个数, 即 $\operatorname{dim}V$.
